Grant round- Opportunity for mental health training

August 9, 2016

The 2016 Thomas Trauer Grant has been announced through St Vincent’s Foundation, with grants of $10,000 available.  St. Vincent’s Foundation invites project proposals for activities which support mental health priorities in low resource settings and encourage any inquiries, ideas and questions about this partnership opportunity.

Applications will be received from 1 August to 30 September 2016.

The aim of the Thomas Trauer Grant is to build capacity in the mental health workforce by providing access to much needed resources in research, mentoring, and teaching.  Tom Trauer was a passionate researcher, teacher, mentor and clinician in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, who was known for his supportive nature, generosity and dedication to his work.  Tom was passionate about service development overseas, and particularly in developing countries of the Asia Pacific. This interest led to travel to such countries as China, Cambodia, Qatar, Laos, Vietnam, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Canada, Israel and England to provide advice on service delivery, policy and research.

The grants hope to encourage professional development activities in the area of mental health and partnerships with potential to access further resources in Australia to support sustainability and strategic capacity building.  Projects over $10,000 will also be considered against the criteria of building mental health workforce.  St. Vincent’s Foundation has experience in supporting a wide range of projects such as engaging technical assistance for one off training programs, regional seminars, conferences, and work placements.  Asia Australia Mental Health and the POST program would be able to work with health professionals through existing public health institutional linkages and develop individual scholarships to enhance leadership in Community Mental Health in the Asia Pacific through fellowship training under the POST Program (Contact the POST program directly post.program@ svha.org.au)
