High-level Philippines delegation hosted by AAMH

On the 24th April 2013, AAMH welcomed 50 visiting Filipino Psychiatrists to observe the St Vincent’s Mental Health Inpatient Unit and the Footbridge Community Care Unit. The group of mostly doctors were in Melbourne to study the Victorian Community Mental Health Model and originated from various metropolitan and regional areas in the Philippines.

Among the group was Dr. Japhet Gensaya -Fernandez de Leon, President of the Philippine Psychiatric Association and collegiate of AAMH Co-Director A/Prof Chee Ng. Presentations on the history of community mental health integration in Victoria and benefits of the Strengths Model were provided along with a tour of both facilities. The doctors were impressed and noted that they are motivated in working towards community mental health support for people in the Philippines.

The Philippines are also a long-term important contributor to the Asia Pacific Community Mental Health Development Project, a network of mental health leaders coordinated by AAMH.
